Why study behavioural science?

Behavioural science is the study of how people think, feel, and act. It helps us understand, predict, and influence human behaviour in ways that create meaningful change—whether in business, public policy, health, or everyday life.

From encouraging sustainable choices to boosting team performance, behavioural science shows how small shifts can lead to big results.

In today’s rapidly evolving workplace, behaviour change is not optional—it’s essential. A deeper understanding of behavioural science can help you:

  • adapt and thrive in changing environments by building individual and organisational resilience
  • enhance productivity – for yourself, your team, and your business
  • improve wellbeing – supporting mental health and positive habits
  • promote ethical and sustainable behaviours across your work and leadership
  • foster equity, diversity, and inclusion within your organisation
  • strengthen cross-cultural collaboration by improving communication, negotiation, and teamwork skills.

Whether you’re leading teams, designing policies, building products, or simply looking to better understand people, behavioural science offers powerful tools to help you make a lasting impact.

Course delivery team

Our academic team has extensive experience working with global businesses and organisations, applying behavioural science to address real-world challenges.

Dr Andrew Marcinko

Associate Professor and Director of Professional Education in Behavioural Science

Dr Andrew Marcinko’s research explores how behavioural science can help organisations become more ethical, inclusive, and effective, with a particular focus on diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and authenticity. His latest work examines how behavioural insights can enhance ‘soft skills’ training in areas such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience.

Beyond academia, Andrew has worked with global businesses and organisations — including Panasonic, NatWest, Squire Patton Boggs, Birmingham City Council, and the United Nations — to help them apply behavioural science to real-world challenges.

Dr Karolina Nieberle

Associate Professor and Deputy Director of Professional Education in Behavioural Science

Dr Karolina Nieberle is a social and organisational psychologist, and a certified psychological trainer who has worked with multinational organisations across business, education and the arts to help unlock leadership potential, enhance collaboration, and foster wellbeing.

Karolina has a strong interest in better understanding how individuals develop, form and sustain their identities as leader and followers.

Dr Rohan Kapitany

Assistant Professor

Dr Rohan Kapitany specialises in experimental and quantitative methods. Prior to joining Durham University in 2024, Rohan spent three years each at Oxford University (in the school of Anthropology) and Keele University (Psychology).

He has a particular interest in statistical and inferential methods, and his primary research interest is on understanding the reciprocal influence of culture and cognition.

Dr Chuma Owuamalam

Assistant Professor

Dr Chuma Owuamalam’s research focuses on understanding how social identities and inequalities that exist in societies shape the outcomes of people from a variety of backgrounds (including race, gender and sexual orientation).

Dr Vladimir Ponizovskiy

Assistant Professor

Dr Vladimir Ponizovskiy uses computational methods to study the ways in which stories motivate human behaviour. He consults for the European Commission, Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and other intergovernmental organisations on the topics of media, persuasion, and value framing of political topics.

Identity and Inclusion: Behavioural Insights for Leaders

Lead inclusively using behavioural science and identity-based strategies
Leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all, but what the best leaders share is the ability to lead inclusively – with awareness, adaptability, and intention.

On this three-week course from Durham University, you’ll explore the psychology of identity and behaviour to understand how to lead effectively in diverse and international work environments.

Whether you’re new to leadership, preparing for a promotion, or managing a multicultural team, you’ll learn practical techniques to create shared team identities, navigate diversity-related anxieties, and improve organisational inclusion.

Understand how identity shapes behaviour in teams
You’ll begin by unpacking the personal versus social identities and why understanding this distinction is essential for effective leadership.

Reflecting on your own experiences (as a team member or a leader), you’ll grasp how social identity influences team behaviour and decision-making.

Apply behavioural strategies to shape inclusive team dynamics
Next, you’ll utilise behavioural insights to represent the team’s shared identity and reinforce inclusive leadership.

This course will also help you discover practical ways to build psychological safety, foster a sense of belonging, and elevate your team’s performance.

Navigate diversity-related anxiety and improve team resilience
Finally, you’ll explore the psychology behind diversity-related anxiety, such as stereotype threat and unconscious bias, and their impacts on productivity and well-being.

You’ll gain strategies to address these issues constructively and foster a more inclusive workplace culture.

By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped with identity-based tools to lead more effectively, support diverse teams, and drive meaningful inclusion in your organisation.

Behavioural Insights with Data: Unlocking Human Behaviour

While ever larger amounts of data become available to us, for managers and leaders the data that matters most relates to people and their complex and multifaceted decisions.

Understanding how human behaviour translates into data is crucial for making informed and effective decisions.

This short course brings together learning from behavioural science and data science to equip you with the tools to collect, interpret, and communicate behavioural insights responsibly and effectively.

Through a combination of theory and case studies, you will learn about measurement, data hygiene, traditional versus machine learning analyses, and data visualisation.

Apply behavioural data science to make better decisions in business

Learn to connect behavioural theory with practical data skills to uncover what shapes decision-making, from customer behaviour to workplace motivation.

Each week, you’ll build your confidence in data collection, analysis, and communicating insights for action.

Ethical approaches to behavioural data

Understand why integrity and privacy matter, and explore real-life dilemmas faced by professionals in sales, marketing, HR, and research.

You’ll learn the legal and ethical foundations of collecting and handling behavioural data in different organisational environments, implementing ethical data projects that inspire trust and safeguard wellbeing.

Analysing human behaviour with data

Master the essentials for storing, processing, and analysing behavioural data using techniques ranging from simple statistics to machine learning. You’ll see how data points, can reveal deeper cognitive, social, and situational patterns.

You’ll build fluency in choosing indicators and tools that suit your goals, unlocking new understanding in customer engagement, team motivation, or forecasting.

Communicate behavioural insights for action

Masker skills in visualising and presenting behavioural findings with clarity. Learn to shape insights into stories that drive positive change, blending tables, figures, and plain English for every audience.

You’ll walk away with the ability to evaluate and challenge the behavioural claims made by others, so your decisions remain sharp, ethical, and evidence-based.
